Riccardo Bigon appointed as sporting director

Bologna Fc 1909 can announce that Riccardo Bigon will be the club’s new sporting director starting from Friday 1st July. The official presentation will take place on Wednesday 8th June at 11:00 CEST in the press room at the Dall’Ara Stadium.

Born in Padova on 26 June 1971, Bigon began his career as a director in June 2004 with Reggina from Reggio Calabria after spending his entire playing career with clubs in the Veneto between the amateur leagues and Serie C2. At Reggina, he started out as team manager before becoming the sporting director during President Foti’s time at the club. After spending five years with the Amaranto in Serie A, he moved to a big club and followed in the footsteps of his father Alberto by joining De Laurentiis’s Napoli along with Walter Mazzarri who he worked with successfully during their time in Reggio.

Bigon made an immediate impact as sporting director as Napoli qualified for the Europa League and achieved their highest league finish in 25 years. The partnership with Mazzarri excited the city of Naples and the signing of Cavani changed the balance in the 2010-11 season as the club made a real charge towards Champions League football with an eventual third-place finish and a tally of 21 wins. Such a Napoli side had not been seen since the times of Maradona as they finished second behind Juventus in the 2012-13 season while the San Paolo club maintained a high standard of performances and results.

After adding two Coppa Italia and one Italian Supercup titles and signing key players such as Callejon and Higuain, he moved to Setti’s Hellas Verona after six years at the highest level with Napoli. After an unfortunate season for the Gialloblù that ended with relegation to Serie B, he is ready to start a new adventure with the Rossoblù
