Saturday’s opponents: Sampdoria

Thanks to eight wins from 12 matches this season, Sampdoria currently occupy sixth place in the Serie A league standings with a game in hand. A particularly positive point from this recent streak is six wins out of six at home. Marco Giampaolo has done a superb job with his side of late in Liguria, building a competitive yet solid starting XI, one that has somehow improved despite the summer departures of Schick, Skriniar, Fernandes and Muriel. They’ve experienced only one slip-up so far, coming during a 4-0 defeat to Udinese. Apart from this, they’ve maintained the rhythm and consistency of a top-class side, already overcoming Milan, Juventus and Fiorentina this season. At the heart of their offensive free-flowing football has been the impressive Torreira, who has shown ambition, skill and dynamism, using his low centre of gravity to become a threatening midfielder with an eye for goal (he has superb shooting ability). Featuring with him in the middle is the ambitious Praet, who has formed a great playing relationship with Quagliarella, and Linetty, who is tough in defence and dangerous in attack. This trio is then defended by the experienced Barreto in behind.

Almost 35-years-old, Fabio Quagliarella has once again demonstrated an evergreen ambition for scoring (already bagged seven this season), while he has also paired up extremely well with Zapata up front, who was purchased in the summer. In terms of alternative tools in attack, Ramirez has yet to fully take off, although Caprari is a great option off the bench.

Among the nine players to have scored for Giampaolo’s side this season (303 attacking plays in just 12 matches), this does include the promising talent of Ferrari. Together with Silvestre, who has been at the heart of the Doria defence for years, they’ve formed a solid partnership. They are then backed up by both Bereszynski and Strinic out on the flanks. In their most recent outings, Sampdoria have scored 19 goals in six matches, therefore Bologna must pay distinct defensive attention come Saturday.
