Remembering Anselmo Giorcelli

Anselmo Giorcelli, Bologna goalkeeper from 1952 to 1962, died yesterday at the age of ninety. Born in Fontanetto Po (Alessandria) on 21 December 1928, he began his footballing career at Alessandria before moving to Monza. After a period at Monza, he signed for Bologna where he would go on to represent the club in five consecutive championships (from 1952 to 1957), before acting as reserve goalkeeper until his retirement in 1962. In the period between his debut in rossoblù on 14 September 1952 and his final match for the club on 28 April 1957, he played 165 consecutive matches – a record second only to the great Mario Gianni (172). In total, he made 206 appearances for Bologna during his time at the club (192 in Serie A, 8 in the Italian Cup and 6 in European Cups).
