Helander: His career so far

He is the eighth Swedish player in the history of our club. Filip Helander is a physical centre-back who is strong in the area and one who shows great positional sense. A native of Malmö in the far south of Sweden, he developed at his local club before making his professional debut as an 18-year-old in the Allsvenskan and he was immediately spoken of as one of the most promising defenders in the country.

Charismatic and hard-working beyond his years, he loves to direct his team-mates at the back and take responsibility for the coordination of the entire defensive unit. His big chance came when Pontus Jansson left for Torino in 2014 and he was able to show what he could do with the increased responsibility. It was in 2014 when Malmö won their second consecutive title and qualified for the Champions League and it was a real turning point for the player as he became a key member of the side. Helander made nine appearances in the Champions League as the draw gave the Swedish a difficult task against Juventus, Atletico Madrid and Olympiakos.

In the meantime, he also became a key figure in the national Under-21 side as he lined up with Milosevic in a solid back four who eventually won the 2015 Under-21 European Championship in the Czech Republic. Ericson’s side won the title by beating Portugal in the final on penalties. All of Europe began to take an interest in the young Scandinavians and the allure of Serie A convinced Helander to join Hellas Verona the next July. His year with the Gialloblu was complicated and came to a negative end as the side were relegated. Helander made 24 appearances in his first season in the Italian top flight and he also scored two goals, both of which came from his head, against Lazio and Inter.

In August 2016 he joined the Rossoblu on loan with an obligation to buy.
