Bologna FC 1909 and Plastic Free Onlus together for a more sustainable game
A series of initiatives to raise awareness among young footballers, meetings with fans at the stadium, and environmental clean-up days involving both club employees and players. These are the goals of the memorandum of understanding signed between Plastic Free Onlus and Bologna FC 1909, an agreement that establishes shared commitment to promoting a sporting culture based on environmental and social responsibility.
Bologna is now the first Serie A club to officiate Plastic Free as a sustainability partner, launching a strategic collaboration that goes beyond individual initiatives and paves the way for a long-term journey based on sport, education, and respect for the environment. The collaboration begins on November 4, which will be dedicated to the youth sector at the Niccolò Galli Training Centre, where theory and practice will come together for a session focused on education and environmental clean-up. Other initiatives will follow, including volunteers at the Dall’Ara on November 9, for Bologna vs. Napoli, and a big group collective planned in March during the international break. This will be followed by an event in May for players and Rossoblù members.
“The combination of sport and sustainability works,” said Lorenzo Zitignani, CEO of Plastic Free Onlus. “We are launching our first ever strategic collaboration with a Serie A Club, with Bologna. It will be a journey that goes beyond single initiatives and it aims to create real and lasting impact. Raising awareness through a team with a significant media following sends out a strong message. Sport is not just a vehicle for community and education, but also a powerful tool for knowledge and awareness on issues that are crucial for the future of the planet.”
This shared vision sees Bologna FC as an ideal partner and a Serie A pioneer in officially adopting Plastic Free as a benchmark for sustainability. Since 2019, Plastic Free has been committed to combating plastic pollution and, thanks to over 1,200 coordinators and 250,000 volunteers, they have removed nearly 5 million kilograms of plastic and waste from the environment. The duty of the Club translates into tangible action and spreading the message to thousands of people to look after the planet, through the passion and unifying power of football.
Christoph Winterling, Chief Revenues Officer of Bologna FC 1909 said: “We are proud to launch this collaboration with Plastic Free Onlus, which represents an important step in our social and environmental responsibility journey. Bologna would like to be an example not just on the pitch, by promoting sustainable behaviour and educating younger generations on the importance of looking after the planet. We believe that football, with its power to engage and inspire people, is able to truly contribute to the a cultural change needed to build a more sustainable future for everyone.”
