PARIS: The Italian champions matched their reputation. They won easily against Sochaux without having to force the issue. There had been hopes for a battle and a real contest but the Rossoblu took control and it had the rhythm of training session. Bologna’s superiority was obvious as they were able to build up a lead in the first 30 minutes as they gave the crowd an elegant style of football and scored three. Secure in every aspect, Bologna provided an impressive display of compactness and an almost overwhelming display of superiority. A foul from Gasperi led to a Sochaux penalty and they were able to score a consolation. Eight minutes into the second half, Sansone restored the advantage with a powerful effort from 20 metres. The goal saw Bologna let up with their earlier constant pressure and they left space for the opposition safe in the knowledge that the result was safe.
The Rossoblu’s superiority was clear in their control of the ball, the precision of their passes and the admirable intelligence of their play and the variety in their attacks. Ceresoli was at work more in the second half in the second with some saves drawing applause. In the middle, Andreolo dropped well and he was supported capably by the wide players. The attack wasn’t as involved as it was purely academic after the break following their exploits in the first half. Busoni was the most solid while Reguzzoni enjoyed some very good moments. In the middle, Schiavio was wise with his distribution
On Socaux, there’s little to say. They were hyponitsed by Bologna’s intoxicating play in the first half and unable to react. The French looked slow and they wasted their chances. On account of the great heat, the crowd was smaller than expected with around 10,000 people in attendance.
Other results in the tournament. Le Havre: Austria Vienna 2-0 Leipzig. Strasbourg: Slavia 2-1 Phoebus. Antibes: Marseille 1-1 Chelsea.
