Following their emphatic victory over Catanzaro, the enthusiasm surrounding the league leaders had only increased. The Bologna fans now prepared to travel to San Benedetto del Tronto, a place where the Rossoblu had historically done well. More than 5000 fans followed Maifredi’s men to invade the Stadio Riviera delle Palme. This was despite the injuries and suspensions that had complicated things for the coach. Pecci, Stringara and Monza were all absent, whilst 19-year-old Cavallo received his starting debut. Quaggiotto and Gilardi also both returned to starting line-up.
The home side started well and soon received a generous penalty from the referee Di Cola: Cusin bundled over an opponent and Faccini dispatched the spot-kick to make it 1-0. Shortly after, the visitors claimed that Pradella was fouled in the box, as tensions began to rise. It did not take long for Poli to receive a red card, as the referee gave him his marching orders in the 40th minute. It did not seem to be Bologna’s day, but Maifredi did not alter his attacking style, even with a completely different midfield.
Following the interval, a struggling Cavallo was replaced by Pietro Strada, who began to demonstrate his qualities as a trequartista and helped salvage a result during a scrappy match. Sambenedettese soon responded and doubled their lead in the second half thanks to Mandelli. The 10 men of Bologna were now losing by two, although their marvellous fans helped the squad react. Whilst latching onto a long ball from Strada, Pradella reacted quickly to the flick-on header and shortened their lead with half an hour to go. The defenders began to launch high balls forward with more continuity. Domenghini encouraged his team to defend, although Bologna found the equalizing goal in the 77th minute, as Marronaro scored a well-taken free kick from distance. In the final stages, with Sambenedettese on the ropes, the away side were unable to land the knockout blow. Click here for the highlights from that day.
