#OnThisDay: Goalless draw with Triestina secures Bologna’s sixth Scudetto

Bologna’s sixth Italian title was won on 27th April 1941, 76 years ago to the day. Hermann Felsner’s great team were able to hang on by tooth and nail after a drop in physical condition at the end of the season to wrap up the title ahead of the Milan sides with a match to spare in Trieste. A goalless draw at the Valmaura stadium was enough as Ambrosiana fell to a 2-0 defeat against Torino while Fiorentina lost 4-1 against Lazio. Bologna added a sixth Scudetto to the honours list and it was the fourth title in six seasons with the club looking unbeatable. There were 92 wins from 180 fixtures in that period, 287 goals scored and only 172 conceded. The Rossoblu were especially formidable at home. The last home defeat had come in 1938 as Bologna were on a real winning cycle on home turf.

The masterstroke of Felsner’s work was above all in attack as the veteran Giovanni Ferrari who had won five titles with Juve and Ambrosiana rotated with the tireless Andreoli as Sansone’s strike partner. The in-form Biavati linked up with Puricelli who was rapidly developing and a real threat with his head (12 headed goals from 22) but he was still very capable on the deck while Reguzzoni was a genuine goalscoring menace. In defence, Pagotto and Fiorini held the middle while the veteran Maini featured less as he moved out to the right and Marchese kept things tight on the left with his sense of timing.

The Rossoblu’s campaign began in the slightly surreal climate of a country at war but with everything still apparently normal. Bologna got off to a somewhat slow start but after six fixtures caught Fiorentina and hit new heights. Juventus and Ambrosiana-Inter followed but the Rossoblu were the winter champions, two points ahead of the Nerazzurri and four points above the Turin club. Things started to go wrong in February and March. Andreolo was out injured and replaced by the more humble Boniforti. Yet, after a few slip-ups, a 5-0 win over Ambrosiana on 30th March practically ended the title race before the victory was made official in Trieste.
